Learn About Us

Beautifully Minded is a community-based initiative designed to support Black caregivers of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Grounded in cultural understanding and collective care, our mission is to reduce isolation, empower caregivers with practical knowledge, and foster a safe and affirming environment where they feel seen, supported, and valued.

We recognize that caregiving within the Black community comes with unique cultural, emotional, and systemic challenges. Beautifully Minded responds to these realities by offering holistic, culturally responsive programming that centers the caregiver experience.

Our Founder, Beautifully Minded

Meet Nneka Perry

Beautifully Minded was born from the deeply personal journey of caregiving a path my sister and I walk every day as the primary caregivers for our mother, who is living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Navigating this journey revealed how isolating and heavy caregiving can be, especially for Black families who often carry the weight in silence. I created Beautifully Minded to offer what we didn’t see enough of, a space rooted in culture, community, and care. A space where caregivers like us can feel seen, supported, and celebrated. It’s more than a program; it’s a movement to end the stigma, build connections, and advocate for caregivers who too often go unseen.

For me, this work is not just professional, it’s personal. Every story we share, every workshop we host, and every community we build is a reflection of the love I have for my mother, and for the caregivers who show up every day for their loved ones.

Meet Our Inspiration

Her Story, Her Strength

Our mother is the heart of Beautifully Minded, her journey, her love, and her unwavering presence are the foundation of everything we’re building.

Born in Jamaica, she came to Canada as a teenager full of promise and determination. She completed high school and post-secondary education while working hard to build a life for herself in a new country. She went on to work at The Bay and Bell Canada for over 28 years and later joined the Toronto District School Board, where she gave over 16 years of service before retiring early due to her Alzheimer’s and dementia diagnosis.

But her greatest and most enduring role has been that of being our mother.

She raised my sister and me with a love so fierce and steady that it became the blueprint for how we now show up for her. She never missed a moment, whether it was piano lessons, school plays, folk dance recitals or track meets; she was there in the front row, cheering us on, holding us up, and making sure we knew we were never alone.

Her commitment to family was matched only by her love for community. She was always the one organizing the parties, welcoming new neighbours, lending a hand, and offering a kind word. A quiet…well but loud advocate and leader, she created connections wherever she went. Her laughter filled every room; her generosity left a mark on everyone she met.

Alzheimer’s and dementia have changed many things but what has never faded is her spirit. Even now, through the confusion and memory loss, there are moments of pure light her laughter, her hugs, her smile. She still shows us what it means to love deeply and fully.

Alzheimer’s and dementia have changed many things but what has never faded is her spirit. Even now, through the confusion and memory loss, there are moments of pure light her laughter, her hugs, her smile. She still shows us what it means to love deeply and fully.

She is our reminder that even in the hardest seasons, beauty remains.

And because of her, Beautifully Minded exists, to honour her, to uplift caregivers like us, and to build a community where no one has to do this alone.
